Start a Dayton concrete request

Four things worth including

1. Where the house is. A brick bungalow in Oakwood with a garage off the alley, a two-year-old build in Beavercreek and a farmhouse on a lane outside Troy sit on different dirt and pose different access puzzles, so the town alone narrows things down.
2. The job, roughly sized. Maybe it is a fresh driveway, an extra parking spot beside the garage, a backyard slab, a walk and stoop, a pad for a shed or barn, or a replacement for concrete that has sunk or started peeling. Ballpark dimensions are plenty.
3. The heaviest user. Say whether it will carry only family cars or something bigger, like a plow truck, a travel trailer, a loaded spa or shop tools. Weight drives the depth of stone, the slab thickness and the steel.
4. What covers the spot now. Grass, crushed stone, cracked concrete or old blacktop. If something must be broken up and trucked away, that becomes part of the job.

Pictures that save time

Start with one broad view that takes in the full work area and its surroundings, so the lay of the land is clear. Add tight shots of each crack, dropped panel, flaking patch or chipped edge. Best of all is a photo snapped in a downpour, or right after, showing which way the water travels and where puddles form. With so much clay in the ground here, runoff has as much to do with a slab’s lifespan as the concrete.

After you send it

The contractor arranges to see the site. Walking the yard, sighting the slope and figuring out where the ready-mix truck can park settle questions no photo can, and only then can a true scope and price be put together. Request that scope on paper, listing the stone base, the slab depth, the reinforcing, the joint plan and the finish, which lets you hold two proposals up against each other point for point.
